I have added bump maps for all ship modules which make the patterns a bit more visible. Due to integrated pixel shaders this feature has a surprisingly small performance impact. I'm still figuring out how to make them look better from afar but they do look quite good from up close:
I removed the old chase camera mode and added a proper mouse controlled interface complete with a crosshair.
With my main exams done I can now find time to continue developing this project. Here are some features that will be probably included in the next update:
This one should be fairly self-explanatory. Basically the effects like lasers and engine effects that are emitted by faction specific modules are now colored differently.

I'm totaly overhauling the planetary textures and adding bump maps to most of them which makes them appear much more realistic with little to no difference in performance.
The main reason this update is taking so long are the mechanics that I'm overhauling. As stated before, you will be able to fly around in 3 dimensions instead of being constricted to just two. There is no real ETA on the update yet, but it should be done before the month is out.
